Nanny Cams
Whether we like it or not, parents get nervous when they leave their children under someone else’s care. Even if they’ve been through the whole process of searching out the best candidates, checking references, interviewing them and observing them with their children. Just as children sometimes experience separation anxiety when being away from the parents, parents do as well!
So what do they do when they have to go to work, or have to go that meeting? They set up nanny cams in their house.
Nanny cams are small cameras that are hidden around the house, perhaps just in one room or multiple rooms. And while installing them may seem untrusting, paranoid, or plain icky, parents don’t see it that way. Unfortunately, they have seen far too many horror stories on the news to feel safe about leaving their kids with even the most qualified nanny, on a regular basis.
Nanny cams are the only way they can know what the nanny is really doing when they are not home.
When parents set up nanny cams, they’re not necessarily interested in how many times you go to the bathroom, if you get a few phone calls or what you take out of their fridge (unless any of these are extreme). They care about how you relate to their kids – do you yell, or worse, hit? Do you ignore them or give them attention? Do you respect their house and furniture, or do you damage it, treat it badly or even steal it?
These are the types of things that parents are looking out for. And as a college nanny, you might not like it at first, but if you are really good at what you do, you should have no problems with it. If you raise your voice once, you probably have nothing to worry about. Parents also raise their voices every now and then, believe it or not! But parents just want to see that you consistently take good care of their children, who are so very dear to them.
And if you are a good nanny, you shouldn’t sweat about whether there are nanny cams in your employer’s house or not. A good nanny will focus on the children, and feel confident in her abilities. Besides, there’s no real way to ever know! Parents will not readily admit to having a nanny cam, because they want to see how you act naturally.
So that’s what you should do – act naturally. Again, if you have nothing to hide, the possibility of a nanny cam shouldn’t bother you. You should just keep doing the great job you’re doing.
